Annual Great Reading Competition at Lpeak Primary School: Cultivating Young Readers for a Bright Future

A memorable and prestigious Great Reading Competition at Lpeak Primary School in Kampong Siem District, Kampong Cham Province, was grandly celebrated on July 10, 2026, featuring the participation of 26 brave and enthusiastic young students. Organized under the Happy Cambodian Children (HCC) project by Kampuchea Action to Promote Education (KAPE), this significant event aims to address national literacy challenges by transforming students into independent, self-driven readers with strong habits of research and continuous learning. This competition served not merely as a test of proficiency but as a vital platform to showcase the potential, talent, and perseverance of young children who represent the future of the nation.
To reach this final stage, the students successfully navigated rigorous qualifying rounds, which required them to read multiple books and maintain highly detailed reading records. Most impressively, the students demonstrated exceptional critical thinking through their selection of profoundly meaningful topics for their presentations. They eloquently discussed texts focusing on virtue and perseverance, such as "Respecting Parents," "Good Friends," and "Be Proud but Not Arrogant". Furthermore, these young minds exhibited a high level of comprehension by exploring themes of personal development and intellect with titles like "The Benefits of Journalism," "The Path to Becoming Smart," "Struggle Today to Win Tomorrow," and "Learn to Value What We Currently Have," reflecting a maturity in their analytical skills.
Going beyond personal growth, the competition also revealed the children's acute awareness of broader societal and national issues. They boldly presented and debated complex topics, including "Cambodia's Natural Resources," "A Strong Nation Because Citizens Respect Their Roles," and "Spreading Awareness on the Harmful Effects of Tobacco". The resounding success of this program stems from the unwavering support of homeroom teachers and parents, who encouraged these 26 students to truly embody the core message of one of the presented books: "Read to Understand, Not Just to Finish". This event stands as a robust step toward developing model schools and ensuring a sustainable, high-quality transformation in education.
