From a Traditional Classroom Teacher to a Professional Mentor: The Success Story of Ms. Im Leang Sim

Ms. Im Leangsim is a dedicated educator at Serei Mongkul High School, located in Rokakaong II Commune, Muk Kampoul District, Kandal Province. Before joining the New Generation Pedagogical Research Center (NGPRC), she had accumulated five years of teaching experience, primarily relying on traditional methods and her own intuition. During those years, her approach to classroom challenges was limited; she focused on strictly following the curriculum schedule, advising students to practice self-study, and encouraging them to seek additional information through textbooks or the internet. While these efforts were sincere, they lacked a systematic pedagogical foundation and were often insufficient in addressing the diverse and complex learning needs of her students.

A pivotal turning point in her career arrived in 2019 when she successfully passed the entrance examination to become a candidate for the Master of Education in Mentoring as part of the first cohort at the NGPRC, National Institute of Education. This opportunity opened a new chapter of knowledge that she had never encountered before. Through a scholarship program funded by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and implemented by KAPE, she underwent intensive training in 21st-century teaching methodologies, the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education, and most importantly, professional mentoring skills designed to empower fellow teachers.

The most profound transformation for Ms. Im Leangsim was her transition from a teacher focused solely on lesson delivery to a pedagogical leader characterized by flexibility and collaborative prowess. She developed exceptional interpersonal skills and learned how to utilize research methodologies to solve practical classroom issues. The stark contrast between her professional life before and after joining the NGPRC lies in her newfound self-confidence and her ability to analyze educational problems through a technical lens, significantly elevating her professional standing within the educational community. She has now emerged as a vital resource, ready to strengthen educational quality in schools as a highly skilled Mentor.

Reflecting on her journey and the impact of this training, Ms. Im Leang Sim shared an insightful perspective: "Studying at the New Generation Pedagogical Research Center has been a vital bridge that completely transformed my educational perspective. KAPE has professionally trained teachers using innovative and modern methodologies to strengthen our capacity as highly qualified Mentors who can effectively support and guide fellow teachers in schools to meet the educational demands of the digital age." In a more concise sentiment, she noted that "NGPRC is the place that cultivates the spirit of teachers to become professional mentors for the future of Cambodian education."

However, looking toward the future, she suggested that the project should consider extending the study duration to two years. This would allow candidates sufficient time for in-depth research and the development of more comprehensive and stable curriculum plans for the long-term benefit of the national education sector.
