The Beacon of Hope for Sokha Sokhen under the GEI Project Intervention

In a rural village of Damril commune, Tboung Khmum province, 14-year-old Sokha Sokhen stands as a symbol of resilience and perseverance despite her family's challenging circumstances. Sokhen lives in a small zinc-roofed house that becomes stiflingly hot during the dry season and noisy during the rain, yet this is the very place where she tirelessly pursues her education. Her father is a street balloon vendor with a meager and unstable income, while her mother is a dedicated housewife. Previously, her older brother was forced to drop out of school to get married and work as a hired driver to help ease the family's financial burden. Poverty was nearly a dark shadow haunting Sokhen's educational future, especially when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, causing her father's balloon sales to stall and leaving the family without sufficient funds to support her studies.

Before the arrival of the Girls' Education Initiative (GEI) project by KAPE, Sokhen and her family had almost lost all hope. Online learning during school closures was a severe burden due to the lack of study equipment, the inability to afford internet services, and a lack of technical guidance. However, everything changed when the GEI project stepped in. This initiative did not only provide scholarship packages that alleviated her parents' financial stress but also established an online learning system, study clubs, and active emotional support. Through the scholarship funds, Sokhen could afford internet data and essential stationery, allowing her to study online for up to eight hours a day, despite the challenging internet connectivity in rural areas.

Sokhen's remarkable success lies in the fact that she does not learn only for herself; she has become a light for others. She actively participates in study clubs with her peers and volunteers to teach younger children in her village. Utilizing her passion for the Khmer language and her love for reading storybooks, she creates a joyful learning environment for other children. The profound transformation brought by the GEI project is the conversion of a girl who nearly dropped out into a top student and a young leader in her community. This serves as a testament that when targeted support is provided, the barriers of poverty cannot hinder the pursuit of knowledge.

With eyes full of hope, Sokha Sokhen shared that “I never thought my family would have the means to let me study this much, especially when my father couldn't sell balloons and our house was in a difficult state. But the GEI project provided the encouragement and the scholarship that enabled me to study online and buy the books I love. I have learned so much from the study clubs, and I want to share what I know with other children so they can excel just like me. I will work hard to become a teacher in the future to help the children in my village.” She also added briefly that “Education is the only light that will help my family escape poverty.”

Meanwhile, Sokhen's mother, who used to worry deeply about her daughter's future, expressed with excitement​ that “As a mother, I am incredibly proud of Sokhen. In the past, I was always afraid that our family wouldn't be able to afford a high level of education for her like others, but since KAPE and the GEI project arrived, my daughter's academic life has completely changed. They haven't just helped with the finances for her schooling; they have also motivated her to be even more diligent. Seeing my daughter able to study online for many hours and having friends come to study with her every day gives me so much strength, and I am deeply grateful to this project for not giving up on a poor girl like my daughter.”

The lesson learned from Sokhen's story is the cultivation of self-determination in education. Even with external support, success would not have been possible without her personal struggle of studying eight hours a day and her willingness to help others in study clubs.
