Eighteen schools in Takeo province now have clean drinking water, functioning toilets and handwashing stations, thanks to a water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programme completed this month.
Inadequate sanitation is a quiet but serious barrier to education. Children — especially girls — often miss school or drop out entirely when facilities are unsafe or simply absent. The new infrastructure directly addresses that risk.
More than pipes and tanks
Alongside the physical upgrades, KAPE worked with each school to set up student-led hygiene clubs, train staff on maintenance, and integrate handwashing into the daily routine. The goal is lasting behaviour change, not just new buildings.
18 schools reached
Safe drinking water for ~7,500 students
Separate, lockable toilet blocks for girls and boys
Student hygiene clubs at every school
Early monitoring already shows a measurable drop in illness-related absences across the participating schools.
