When Makara, who is deaf, first arrived, his teacher did not know any sign language. Two years later, half his classmates do.
KAPE's inclusive education programme supports schools to welcome children with disabilities into mainstream classrooms — with the training, materials and adapted teaching they need to thrive rather than simply attend.
Small changes, big difference
Makara's teacher completed a course in basic Khmer sign language and inclusive teaching methods. The classroom layout changed, visual aids increased, and a peer-support system paired Makara with rotating classmates. The whole class, it turned out, learned better.
Inclusion is not charity. A classroom that works for the child who learns differently works better for everyone.
Makara is now near the top of his class in mathematics — and is teaching his teacher new signs every week.
